The attempt will take recyclable plastic packaging sourced from residents and tourists from recycling collected in the borough during August and processed by contractor, Viridor.

During the Bournemouth Arts Festival in October, the world record attempt will take place as part of an engagement event for local residents and festival visitors.

Bournemouth handles 361.98 tonnes of rubbish and recycling collected from its beachside bins every year, part of the 86,694 tonnes collected by the borough every year.

Viridor processes the borough’s recycling and each year sends more than 1,842 tonnes of Bournemouth’s plastic packaging to be made into new products including new plastic bottles, furniture or clothing.

Councillor Michael Filer, portfolio holder for cleansing & waste, at Bournemouth Borough Council, said: “It’s pleasing that the vast majority of people put their packaging in the bin or take it home to recycle. However, we want to make sure even more is recycled, and so we’ve partnered up with #pledge4plastics to promote awareness and drive home the message that more can still be done.”

Kevin Vyse, Packaging Innovation Lead, M&S, said: “Pledge 4 Plastics has been one of the foremost campaigns at raising consumer awareness for the recycling of plastic bottles, pots and trays. Marks and Spencer are delighted to support this initiative as part of our drive to promote the sustainable use of packaging.”

Katherine Fleet, group sustainability manager at RPC said: “RPC supports initiatives that encourage the increased recycling of plastic packaging in order to reduce the environmental impact of the material at end-of life and to allow the plastic to have another life as part of a recycled item.”
